Schlumbergera

In summer, a semi-shaded outdoor location is rewarded and otherwise protection from blazing sun is also good. Christmas cacti need to be watered and fertilised regularly and not allowed to dry out completely. Waterlogging should be avoided, however. The only rest period is 4 to 6 weeks after flowering has finished. During this time, the plants should be left completely dry.

Flowering is promoted by good, regular fertilisation. The right fertiliser is epid fertiliser. Flower induction begins in late summer-autumn as the days become shorter. Cool temperatures also promote flower induction (e.g. staircase). Disturbing light at night can hinder flower formation. Flower buds are shed when the plants dry out severely, when there is a lack of nutrients or when there is a draught.
